The $4 Billion Family That Secretly Owned Portugal... Until It Collapsed: The Espírito Santo Family
Abstract
On August 3, 2014, a Sunday, the Bank of Portugal seized the country's largest private bank, split it in two before the markets opened Monday morning, and wiped out a fortune that a family bearing the name Espírito Santo, Portuguese for Holy Spirit, had spent a hundred and forty-five years building, losing, and rebuilding from a currency-exchange house founded in a Lisbon neighborhood in 1869 into a banking colossus that touched the savings of millions.
